Festival of Regions - Site-specific Art and Culture

The Festival of Regions has been taking place biennially since 1993 at changing locations in the Austrian federal state of Upper Austria (Capital: Linz) and, during this period, has developed into a contemporary focal event for current, site-specific art and culture.

This April I will film and photograph a series of solo subterranean intervention performance works under the Head in a Whole Woman series. These will act as stimuli for others to make their own ‘head in a hole’ actions: Others have their heads… in June I will be giving a series of artist talks for local associations, institutions and individuals. The aim being to gently and with humor, encourage people to initiate their own series of interventions. Interested audience participants have the choice of experiencing the interventions as a group performance - structured as a workshop event or as solo pieces, which will be up loaded onto a public space internet site.

The most interesting and appropriate images will be printed and shown in the Town Hall Square and on the railway’s grounds. The videos will be exhibited on monitors.

The the bus station was selected for the screening of the works. And I felt I should do a piece for that specific location. This turned into a tricky situation as the best place for a intervention was a green thorn bed with a rotten plant container at the center, which I damaged some more by kneeling on the edge to plunge my head into the peaty earth.
whilst I was submerged a group of young people pondered if I was a deranged person. The camera provided a form of protection and captured one fella acted up for his mates. The resulting video piece is a collaborative work between myself and this unknown. It's funny so watch this space and I'll put it up soon.

This September I traveled up to Enniskillen to make a new work for the Enniskillen Open. I spent a day walking around the city. Then I wondering up and down the main street, looking at all the black bins and thinking if I really had reason enough to stick my head in one. As you can see in the end I did. A relatively clean one in front of a church.

Others Have Their Heads involve other people in the interventions. This has developed the concept collaboratively. Initially, the reasoning behind an intervention held elements of protest or social political relevance.
This was developed further when I worked for a number of weeks with eight students from the Sculpture & Combined Media Course in LSAD. The students did interventions in their chosen locations and documented photographically. They brought the resulting documentation in for discussion at scheduled meetings. We then developed group interventions starting in the grounds of the collage. The Limerick work was created for Others Have Their Heads -Limerick number 1 was one of the works shown as a Film Screening on Catherine Street, at the invitation of CATDIG, organized by the SpiritStore, for EVA 2010.

‘ Others Have Their Heads – A subterranean Intervention for CAT DIG’

The following proposal has been accepted for the SpiritStore May event in Limerick, Ireland.

In the summer of 2008 I found a hole in a rural road and put my head in it. I am intrigued by the simple visual metaphor of this action. The moment of production is an integral element of this artistic process, exploring location and exploiting site, with the aim of creating different and unusual contexts.

I would like to propose a new location responsive work for CAT DIG, from the Head in a Hole Woman series, involving myself and seven LSAD students – ‘Others Have Their Heads’. In consultation with the CAT DIG committee the process would involve searching the street for potential external sites such as street furniture and man hole covers. Internal shop sites would be explored for potential intervention in consultation with the tenant.

The resulting documentation would either take the form of stills or video to be displayed on monitor or projection.

Elena emailed me today with a good idea to submit to La Cat Salons in Dublin. I was thinking about our Clare street piece - which has good potential for development. We need to re do it, perhaps at the same time recording an audio piece from the hole. A song or nursery rhythm maybe. It needs to be re-shot because the format and framing are not right. The material we have shot already can be used for the proposal. I'll put the video online this weekend and submit application - it's an online one so can I make it by Monday.

Other’s have their heads…‘I know that the moment of production is an important element of my artistic process. And that the answers to questions I have about my work, is embedded in the process of the work.’ - 'Head in a Whole Woman' an exploration into action and site provide context.

Today in work - Sculpture & Combined Media at Limerick School of Art and Design, LIT. We held the first student ( 9 students - 4 attended) /tutor (me), meeting. I am opened up my artistic process to students from S&CM under the heading of 'Professional Practice'.
This blog is - for a while - going to act as a document of our work together and a form of contact for students working with me. In today's meeting I screened a fresh work shot in a recently cleared forest area and discussed the importance of context in selecting sites to stage an intervention. I'm asking the students to look for sites and contexts of interest for them. I'd like them to document these sites with photographs and either email them to me to put up on this blog, or put them in their own blogs - and we will discuss them at next weeks meeting.

I also talked about the decisions made when an artist chooses to use video or photography to document in our case the 'Head in a Hole' performances. And how the site and place provide the answers to these decisions. Finally, I'm excited to be involving more people into this work. You just never know what's going to happen.

Research into the realisation of this piece included who the users of the space and the timetable of the patients.
The space is filled with sounds from the hospital: Foot steps over different floor surfaces. Cutlery and plates clank down on table tops. The occasional ringing of a high pitch telephone. Low level conversations. Paper crumpling. Doors open and close. The slow shuffle sliding walk of a patient. The hum of air conditioning.
The atrium of the physicist facility is light filled public, hard surfaces clean the seating is uncomfortable. The space is used as a meeting place for patients and family out side of the ward environment. A neutral, supernatural internal place. Allowing children (there is a series of draws filled with toys) to visit. All other artworks that have been placed into this space have not been able to engage with the patients. They are the hardest to bring in to the experience.

I finalized the concept of of a sound portrait of my home life in Ireland use the domestic everyday sounds that surround me. The concept is to bring sounds of home into the clinical environment of the hospital. A simple juxtaposition of domestic rural sounds in a internal clinical environment.

Interface was created for a Masters Degree show in Interactive Media at the University of Limerick.

The research for this work was conducted through a series of interviews with internet users in Limerick City libraries. 'I was interested in the metaphors used to describe the experience of using the internet; such as 'Surfing' and the 'World Wide Web'. Metaphors that often originate from science fiction. What does the internet (at the time of research - 1999) mean to people. How did they visualize it. What words did they use to describe it and how had the internet impacted on their lives.'

"Desk Space" is a digital stills video installation initially created for the Concourse Installation Program (Dun Laoghaire - Rathdown County Council), in 2001.

"Desk Space" is a meditation on office culture; I was permitted to snoop through over 1000 employees working environments, collecting evidence of people. I was inspired by the functional working areas allocated to these individuals and their office environments. These working spaces can often reflect individual's personalities. Whether neat or tidy, people's desk spaces can contain objects of personal significance such as family pictures, plants, or strange toy characters.

The resulting digital video installation is an intimate and often humorous presentation of images, drawn from the surface territory of an individual's desk. "Desk Space" is a magnification of the trivial in order to create a surreal narrative based on the personalization of the working environment.

The "Desk Space" video is 40 min's and comprises of over 400 images, the audio consists of ambient sounds from a working office environment. The piece was originally presented as two 20min projections.

Peripherie comprises still & animated black & white photographs, taken at a specific site situated outside the historic city Weimar in the former East of Germany.

The site contained a building complex originally constructed by the German Nazis army, circa 1940. Taken over in 1945 by the USSR army, local GDR civilians did not have access to the site until after 1989. Presently most of the buildings are derelict, some have been destroyed some converted into flats.
Peripherie is a work created from documentation photographs taken by the artist whilst on residency in Weimar in 1997. The artist selected internal images of the buildings form this documentation and animated a selection of these. The rooms and corridors seem paradoxically familiar and foreign, they are decaying, (or now destroyed). The soldiers and patients that replaced them are gone. The buildings remain holding more than the visible remnants of ideologies

SHHH SHHH SHHH - Windows
The aim of the window based presentation of this artwork was to reach a wider, non gallery based audience in a further attempt to sooth the city. This was achieved by using transducer speakers placed on the inside windows of various locations through out the city of Linz. Such as Goethe Strasse, Land Strasse, Oldstadt and the Promenta head offices. The glass of the street level windows was transformed into speakers. The work was experienced from the inside and outside on the street. The Goethestrasse gallery was an interesting and an apt location as it is a street where many Nebula clients are re-introduced to the city through living in the Neuland apartments. It was also important to have the gallery location to provide information for the project and the other sites in the city.

The Shhh sound though based on the maternal/paternal calming sounds made by parents when soothing their children. A sound to sooth the dark hours. Sound to calm streets, though at another level the sound combined with the darkness of night brought a disturbing, but not unwelcome element to the piece. The audio method and site location supplied different contexts.

The sound piece is finished and the opening is today. After a protracted fight with my apple mac, the final length of the work is seven hours twenty three minutes. The sound technician Bauki now can install the player timer and 'special' speakers. Next I need to locate and upload a sample of audio to a mp3 online player which I can then link to this blog. So you can hear it. I'm also using this blog as a contact point for the staff. So expect some images from my home and a bit of German for those who have not English.
I'll ask Kunstraum to video the piece and will put it up.

Right now I'm working with Kunstraum Linz on a sound piece for Steyr Hospital in Austria. They've asked for some text about the piece. I've worked it out here:

The sound piece 'Animals & Children' has been created specifically for the patients who use the internal garden/atrium space of the psychiatric department of Steyr Hospital.
The artist Amanda Dunsmore spent an afternoon seated in the space and took note of the sounds:
'The constant low hum of the heating system. Cutlery and plates being laid out on a table above where I’m sitting. The distant sound of people walking over different floor surfaces. I hear the sporadic high pitch trill of telephones and the echod patches of conversations, bounce through doors opening and closing. Paper is crumpled and I see the slow shuffle walk of a patient.'

These are all familiar universal hospital sounds. Amanda's concept is simple to bring sounds unfamiliar to the setting but with still within a common context. In response she will create a sound work comprising of domestic sounds from her home life in Ireland. It also Amanda's wish to offer interaction to the staff from the hospital. The artists’ blog 'Head in a Whole Woman' will be utilized to facilitate direct contact with the artist.

I received an email recently that the Esprit Shop in the Passage shopping centre on the main street Landstrasse in Linz is going to show the sound installation in about three weeks, so the beginning of December. Susanne form Kunstraum has asked for some text to go with the work and I thought I'd put it up here too:
'Amanda Dunsmore definitive showing of the sound work series SHHH, SHHH, SHHH, will take place on Landstrasse, Linz in early December 2008. Using cutting edge audio technology in the form of small transducer gadgets attached to the inside of the window glass of the large clothes shop Esprit. In effect transforming the large pains of glass of this shop into speakers.
The sound to come form these unusual speakers was created specifically for street life in the hours of darkness.
Through the repeated 'Shhh' of her voice Amanda attempts to sooth the cold dark festive city streets. Though the soothing sound can come across as eerily suggestive of darker intentions'.

The lasts days in Linz Barbara and I were joined by Wolfgang. Through his work, he has experience with homeless, ex- prisoners, and Nueland clients. He proved vital. We needed his guidance and a personable link to open conversations making people feel comfortable.
I wish we'd done it earlier. There were some wonderful experiences for me. I could feel the pride and emotion as one man told of his twelve years homeless. Others were surprised, always delighted to receive the radios. Though I know it's not nearly enough.

It took some time to decide on the colour and then it took more to get them to the gallery. The radios are placed in foam bags and then placed in the silver, the sticker gives instructions on the piece.

I left my bags at the bus stop and the bus to the airport. Both times people pointed out to me I'd left me bag. The first time I thanked her then explained it was art.

The second time I denied all knowledge, 'That's not my bag, thanks'. Later that day the bus driver phoned the gallery about the left bag...

Monday Daytime 22nd Sept.

Babara – the photographer – and myself went walking today. The weather is much better. And we found homeless people. The first was a group of six men and two woman. Barbara explained that I wanted to give someone a radio and perhaps why…I can’t speak very good German. They were friendly, drunken, and one funny smelling fella nearly got the wrong idea.
I gave the radio to the woman with black hair. She read my letter and spoke English with me a little. Then she gave the radio to her friend. He seemed happy and was madly winding away at the crank when we left with lot’s of friendly goodbyes.

In the same park I spotted a woman couched under a tree drinking from a can. Her blue eyes rimmed with red. She was friendly but didn’t want her photograph taken. She told us she was a Shaman. She had no problem for photographs to be taken of the place she’d chosen to sit. She was very pleased with the radio and immediately danced a slow power dance for us as a thanks. Which was interesting. I’ve had students do similar - there’s a fine line…

We left that park and wondered form park to park finding no more homeless. Finally we found another group under some trees near a fountain drinking from cans. We were drawn towards one woman with a wonderfully interesting face. She politely declined our offers to talk, or accept a radio and did not want to be photographed. So we respectfully departed. Wondered around but found no more and ended the search.

Right now I’m wondering at the meaning of this process. What is the point? In general it is clearly not enough, I’m aware of this fact but I’m now questioning my own reasoning for this process. I can only decide to continue after talking with Barbara and looking at her photographs.

Stayed at the gallery all day and into the night for meetings.

Then watched Bouki & Mickie working hard into the dark hours wiring the windows,whilst I try to figure out how to use the space for the exhibition ‘Bags’.

The transducers pictured here on the inside of the window are very good. The glass of the window is effectivly turned into a 'speaker'. Single glazed is best, but it still works very well on double.

Though I’m feeling insecure about the simplicity of the audio. I need to decide tomorrow on which of the edits is applicable to each context. Six sites - six contexts-one sound piece?

SHHH… - Streets - Sunday 21st Sept - Day 1

Weisengruber Herbert recovering alcoholic and past homeless man and now the official guide to view the places homeless people hang out in Linz.
Costing €15 Gruber took us for a long power walk at dusk.
It was cold and wet. We looked, but found no people of the streets.
The radios and letters still sit in my bag. We'll try again when the weather improves - hopefully tomorrow.

That same week, working at night along side organisations familiar with the street life of Linz, I will attempt to touch the periphery of society, by making contact with people sleeping on the streets.
Traversing Linz’s city, I will present individuals with self powered radios. If individuals are sleeping she will leave a letter and the radio to discover on waking. The radio is theirs to do as they wish.

In September I working on Shhh, Shhh, Shhh… A multi-presentational public audio art work, for Linz, Austria.

The city centre streets will resonated with the sound ‘Shhh, Shhh, Shhh...’. This audio artwork utilizes a universally understood soothing sound. The repeated tone suggests you be still and calm, take comfort and keep safe. I will sooth the night city.
It's my aim that the multi-presentational aspect of this artwork supplies contrasting contexts for the people of Linz. They will discover my voice in many forms:
Shop windows changed into speakers. The audio pulsed directly onto the night streets. In Goethe Strasse, Land Strasse, Oldstadt and the underpass.
Kaunstraum Geothe Strasse will host an evening gallery event consisting of one hundred and fifty bag encased radio receivers, turned to catch ‘Shhh’ from the airways.
Individuals are invited to take the bag radios, and leave them broadcasting the audio in places of personal significance. The sites of the bag radios will be recorded and the subsequent finding and relocating, or discarding will be tracked and later displayed online.

That same week, working at night, I performed an action of art. Traversing Linz’s city, I seeked out and make contact with people living on the streets. Then I presented them with an explanation of the art action and as a token of comfort, give each a self powered radio.

The opening event for this public art project took place at KunstRaum Goethestrasse. Attending individuals will be invited to take part in SHHH SHHH SHHH… public art project by depositing around the city distinctive radio receivers. These bag encased radio receivers are turned to catch the transmitted repeated soft ‘Shhh’ from the airways. Individuals will be invited to take the bag radios, and leave them in places of personal significance. Participants are asked to record

these chosen locations with the cameras in their mobile
phones and/or text in the site to KunstRaum Goethestrasse. In this way it is hoped the bags will travel around the city and beyond, discarded or kept. Initially the bag radios will be turned to receive Dunsmore sound works which will be broadcast from 2 – 4 am from the 25th through to the 30th September by Radio FRO Linz. Though the artist is happy for finders of the bags to re tune.
